Fria Superfoods

I’ve always been an everything-in-moderation kinda gal.

I love my morning oats – and the occasional pizza – far too much to even dally with the idea going paleo. And the milky, frothy cappuccino I indulge in daily (plus the choccie treats I find myself munching on probably more than necessary) means going vegan is a no-go either.

So when I tried out Fria’s Superfoods, I was skeptical… I mean, that Snickers Cake sounds freaking delish – but without chocolate? Sacrilege!

But one bite in, I didn’t even notice. With the help of my boyfriend – who has even more of a sweet tooth than I do – I sampled several of Fria’s treats in one sitting! All in the name of research, of course.

Picture this: a crunchy peanut base topped with rich layers of chocolate, coconut and caramel dates… Yip, it tasted as good as that sounds.

Incredibly, the Snickers Cake Cup is refined sugar-, dairy-, egg- and gluten-free – but thanks to the clever use of dates and cacao nibs, the little tub of Snickers Cake is rich, sweet and chocolatey enough even for the likes of moi.

Another of my faves were the Sweet Potato Brownie Balls – which are vegan too! A close third was Fria’s Lemon Bliss Balls. Even though I’m not usually a lemon fan, these bite-sized delights were sweet enough to match that tangy lemony flavour.

Healthy and packed with nutrients these healthified delights may be, but I’d advise not to eat them in one go, like I did – or like, eat them every day for breakfast (tempting as it may be).

Since the goodies are sweetened with dates and given flavour with things like peanut butter and cacao nibs, they’re not low-cal. My beloved Snickers Cake, for example, comes in at about 600 cal.

But, as owner Fria Hiemstra (who’s actually an actuarial scientist IRL) will tell you, she designed her treats to be exactly that – a healthy, refined sugar-free alternative for when you want to treat yo’self.

There are plenty of other yummy bites to try too – the Banocolate Cake is also a win, and the Peppermint Mousse Cake is a must if you love Peppermint Crisp Tart!

You can grab Fria’s Superfoods online; at Wellness Warehouse in Kloof Street or Cavendish Square; or Spar in Vredehoek or Seapoint.
